Eric Bailly has been deemed surplus to requirements by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who is prepared to sell the Manchester United defender in the summer.

The Ivory Coast international arrived at Old Trafford during Jose Mourinho’s first summer in charge of the club but has regularly struggled with injuries and is now firmly behind Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof in his new manager’s defensive pecking order.

Metro.co.uk revealed earlier this week that Solskjaer, armed with a £200million budget, is hoping to strengthen four areas of his team this summer by bringing in two new full-backs, a winger and a No.10.

Reports elsewhere, however, claim that United will pursue their long-standing interest in Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld once the transfer window reopens, now that the 30-year-old is available for just £26m.

In January Spurs activated a counter-clause in the defender’s contract that will permit the former Southampton and Atletico Madrid star to leave for a cut-price fee, as long as a deal can be completed within the final two weeks of this summer’s transfer window.

With Smalling, Lindelof and Phil Jones, who recently signed a new long-term deal, already on the books United, according to the Mirror, will look to recoup as much of the £30m they invested in the 24-year-old when they bought him from Villarreal as possible.

Arsenal have regularly been linked with Bailly over the last 12 months and are certain to look for defensive reinforcements in the summer given doubts of Laurent Koscielny’s longevity and Shkodran Mustafi’s future, while Tottenham also maintain an interest.
