Anfield hero Steven Gerrard is on the FA’s shortlist for the England job according to former technical director Dan Ashworth.

The current Rangers boss is on a prospective list to takeover from Gareth Southgate when the current manager’s reign comes to an end.

Other candidates are Premier League bosses Sean Dyche and Eddie Howe.

The list also includes Frank Lampard, Phil Neville and Aidy Boothroyd.

Speaking to The Times, Ashworth admitted the importance of ensuring there is a catalogue of top quality English managers and coaches in the game.

Ashworth, who left the FA to take up a recruitment role at Brighton & Hove Albion last year, said: “It’s our job to make sure we have enough people on the radar that are English-qualified coaches, that hold the right attributes.

“Whether they are in the system like Phil and Aidy, or out of the system like Steven, Frank, Eddie, Sean, that we have the right relationships with them. So, should the time come when Gareth moves on, we have a bigger and better pool of English coaches that are able and interested in taking the job.”

The former director thinks Gerrard is a future candidate due to his growing experience in the Scottish Premiership, he acknowledged: “Steven took Liverpool Under-18 for over a year, Steven has gone to Rangers.”

He is hopeful the former Reds captain can go on to be a successful Premier League and England manager alongside those previously mentioned.

With many Liverpool fans keen for Gerrard to make a return to Anfield at some point in the future.
