He arrived at Tameside Magistrates’ Court wearing a blue shirt and a navy blazer and tie.Dad Paul, who was one of the finest English midfielders of his generation, arrived wearing a grey jumper and black trousers. Arron had earlier pleaded not guilty to the alleged assault. Today was the first day of his trial.

An earlier hearing heard that Arron attacked the man in the Upper Mill area of Oldham. He is accused of “laughing hysterically” during the attack and taking a photo of the man’s face. If convicted, Arron could face up to six months in jail. Paul recently stood down as Oldham boss after just 31 days in charge. He resigned by WhatsApp message to chairman Abdallah Lemsagam. Paul said it had “become clear I would not be able to operate as I intended and was led to believe”.
