Nemanja Vidic- This is what Manchester United is lacking

Nemanja Vidic has said it should be Manchester United’s priority to strengthen their midfield this summer.

The widely held opinion among supporters is that the most pressing area where United need to recruit is in defence, with Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly mentioned as a possible £100million target.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s predecessor Jose Mourinho routinely bemoaned a lack of star quality in his back line and he is known to have been frustrated by the club’s failure to back him when he wanted to sign a new defender in last summer’s transfer window.

However, Vidic believes United are already well stocked at the back and he believes more strength in depth is required in the midfield area.

Asked about the possibility of Toby Alderweireld moving to United in the summer, Vidic told Stadium Astro:“Of course, I would like to see him there.

“But I think the club has to have a priority.

“What I see is, if you want to be in the Champions League next season and challenge for the Premier League, you have to strengthen the midfield.

“You need that depth in the midfield area.

“In defence they already have five players, so they can rotate, and it seems like they’re doing well.”

United currently have five senior centre-backs in Chris Smalling, Victor Lindelof, Phil Jones, Eric Bailly and Marcos Rojo, while they have six central midfielders in Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Ander Herrera, Fred, Scott McTominay and Andreas Pereira.

The Reds have high hopes for teenage midfielder James Garner, who last week signed a new long-term contract with the club shortly after his 18th birthday.
