Suspected robbers lynched after theft attempt goes wrong

Police officers in Kericho are holding one robbery suspect who was part of a gang that attempted to rob an auto spares shop in town on Sunday afternoon.

The suspect was reportedly part of a gang of three, there two were reportedly killed by an angry mob after their robbery attempt on went wrong.

Confirming the incident, Kericho county commander James Mugera said that the group was armed with a homemade pistol which has been confiscated by the law enforcers.

He said that the robbery went dramatic after customers at the shop began fleeing, where the members of the public joined the shop employees in giving the suspects a chase and finally cornered them.

“Their attention was disrupted by other unsuspecting customers who entered the shop and they attempted to flee. The suspects were pursued by the employees who gave a chase and cornered them before they could board their getaway car,” he was quoted by the Standard.

The police boss said that suspect who has been identified as Joel Nyongesa is helping the police with investigations, after which he will be charged with robbery with violence.

“The suspect in police custody will be taken to court once we complete investigations,” he added.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to the Kericho District Hospital Mortuary pending further investigations.
