Wenger departed the Emirates at the end of last season after 22 years in charge. Many supporters wanted Wenger out after a poor couple of seasons, with Arsenal only finishing sixth in the Premier League last season. Arsene Wenger insists he does not need to give Arsenal boss Unai Emery advice on how to beat Napoli in the Europa League.

Unai Emery replaced Wenger and has got the Gunners fighting in the top four, while the club have also progressed to the last eight of the Europa League. They will face Napoli in the quarter-finals in one of the toughest ties in the round.

But Wenger is backing his former side to progress, and is adamant Emery has the tactical nous to get past Carlo Ancelotti. “I will be an Arsenal fan on the night of game against Napoli, just as I have been during all their matches this season,” Wenger told Italian newspaper Il Mattino.

“Emery doesn’t need any advice from me. I am a huge fan of Carlo Ancelotti, he’s one of the greatest technicians of all time, a true master in the way he works with his teams but Arsenal are a great team and for Napoli it will be a very difficult task to knock them out.”R

Arsenal have impressed under Emery this season, and have picked up 12 points against teams in the top six. That compares to just six under Wenger last season and defender Laurent Koscielny appeared to take a dig at the former boss when praising Emery.

“Our record against the other big six teams this season is positive,” he said. “We have won 12 points compared to six last season.”

“It shows how we are approaching those games differently. It is not just about attacking. We are more intelligent, we are more measured in our plans.”

“We can change tactics halfway through a game, we can set up differently. The manager is using different formations and it shows his flexibility and the players’ too which is a good thing. Of course, we still need to do better away from home in the big games but we are on the right path.”
