Imagine being in high school getting ready to attend an event only for the bus or mode of transport for the day to fail to show up. And after all that anticipation of leaving the ‘Gates of Hell’ aka School.
58 students and four teachers from Misikhu Friends Boys High School in Kisumu were left stranded on Wednesday in Kisumu, after the management of Nilam Garage impounded their school bus.
The students were stranded for 24 hours when a garage owner impounded their bus over an alleged Ksh1.6 million debt.
The boys, who had gone for a study tour spent the night in Kisumu Boys dining hall.
Reports from The Standard indicate the driver left them at the Impala Park at 3 p.m. and went to their usual garage for repair when the vehicle was detained.
“We waited, but after being informed that the bus was not coming, we were advised to trek to the town centre at around 7:30 p.m. where arrangements were made to have us accommodated,” narrated a student.
The principal, Maurice Otunga, accused the garage owner, Nilesh Patel of being inhumane.
“We have no documents showing the Board of Management approved the garage to repair that vehicle and I don’t understand why he had to wait for our students to come in the bus to Kisumu and then leave them in the park,” stated Otunga.
Patel admitted to detaining the vehicle over debt owed to him. However, he cited he did not know the students were stranded.
Speaking to the publication, he stated that he was willing to have the students driven back to their school in another vehicle as he detained the bus.
He added that the school had not communicated on how they would recover the debt.
However, he promised to return the vehicle after the debt gets fully paid.
