Kenya’s national soccer team Harambee Stars lands a lucraive sponsorship deal from betting firm

Kenya’s Harambee Stars have signed Sh20 million sponsorship from gaming firm, Betin, to support preparations for Africa Cup of Nations set for Egypt on June 21-July 2.

The deal would motivate the national team as they return to Africa’s biggest football stage after 15-year absence.

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa said Sh5million will be used to kit the team.

“This deal will really help Betin to do several activities with the team. We are delighted by this partnership as we believe it will help us to achieve our ambitions of doing well in the tournament,” he said during the launch yesterday.

The FKF boss said he hopes Betin will soon cast their net wider and work with the federation in supporting the sport from grassroots.

Mwendwa said the federation has proposed attractive bonuses for the team while they Egypt for the three-week tournament.

“There will be about Sh7million to be paid to the team for every match they win in Egypt. Should they win the tournament, the players will earn a bonus of Sh120million excluding money from the organisers.

“We have been assured by the government that the Sh240million we requested will be available this week to enable us pay for the camp in France and other preparations,” said Mwendwa.

Betin Marketing Director Carlo Buttaci said the company aims at promoting grassroots football.

“This is the beginning of a great partnership which we hope will give us an opportunity to promote grassroots football as well. This is where the latent talent is and it would be great to give them an opportunity to develop,” he said.

Harambee Stars coach Sebastien Migne said the sponsorship has come at a crucial time and will boost morale in the team.

“We are going for a major competition and need the support of everyone, sponsors, government, media and all stakeholders and this is good gesture coming at this time,” said the Frenchman.

He defended the team’s decision to train in France ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations finals.

“The weather is perfect at the time and a number of African teams will also be in France making it easy to play a number of build up matches,” he said.

Migne regretted the absence of Japan-based striker Michael Olunga, who is injured and will not play against Ghana next weekend.
