On-Form Sofapaka stun AFC Leopards to assume League leadership

Sofapaka have assumed leadership of the SportPesa Premier League after stunning AFC Leopards 1-0 in pulsating encounter at the Bukhungu Stadium on Wednesday.

John Avire headed home an Umaru Kassumba cross for the only goal of the game. Batoto ba Mungu are now on 33 points, one ahead of previous leaders Bandari.

Leopards threatened early on when Vincent Oburu broke on the left flank to combine with Yusuf Mainge, who curved a rising shot, but it was cleared to safety by Sofapaka players.

Leopards looked to continue with their resurgence under coach Andre Casa Mbungo with a series of attacks but the Sofapaka defence was up to the challenge.

The hosts survived at the half-hour mark when Moussa Omar’s well taken free-kick from the left-flank was not tapped into the back of the net by the yellow shirts, who had flocked inside their box in hunt for the opening goal.

Avire struck with a rising shot at the stroke of halftime to place the visitors ahead. The forward latched on a cross at the edge of the box to fire the Sofapaka ahead.

Staring at their ninth loss of the season, Leopards fans looked frustrate as they jeered every call by the centre referee that went against their team.

Goalkeeper Ndikumana stretched his left leg wide to clear Wyvone Isuza’s 60th minute attempt from the left wing as the host kept fighting on for an equaliser.

The latter was not lucky three minutes later with his overhead finish inside the box.

Eric Kapaito leads the way as Kariobangi Sharks Shock Nzoia Sugar

Sharks striker, Erick Kapaito’s 19th-minute strike is all Kariobangi Sharks needed to stun visiting Nzoia Sugar 1-0 in a midweek SportPesa Premier League match at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani on Wednesday.

Kapaito latched onto a pass from Sydney Lokale to place at the bottom right corner with a low shot for his second goal of the 2018/19 campaign that left Nzoia goalkeeper Humphrey Katasi with no chance.
Victory sends the William Muluya-coached side to 29 points after 17 rounds.

They play Tusker in their next encounter on March 23, while Nzoia – who’ve now lost two in a row, remain on 20 points from 17 games.

Kenya’s national soccer team Harambee Stars lands a lucraive sponsorship deal from betting firm

Kenya’s Harambee Stars have signed Sh20 million sponsorship from gaming firm, Betin, to support preparations for Africa Cup of Nations set for Egypt on June 21-July 2.

The deal would motivate the national team as they return to Africa’s biggest football stage after 15-year absence.

The FKF boss said he hopes Betin will soon cast their net wider and work with the federation in supporting the sport from grassroots.

Mwendwa said the federation has proposed attractive bonuses for the team while they Egypt for the three-week tournament.

“There will be about Sh7million to be paid to the team for every match they win in Egypt. Should they win the tournament, the players will earn a bonus of Sh120million excluding money from the organisers.

“We have been assured by the government that the Sh240million we requested will be available this week to enable us pay for the camp in France and other preparations,” said Mwendwa.

Betin Marketing Director Carlo Buttaci said the company aims at promoting grassroots football.

“This is the beginning of a great partnership which we hope will give us an opportunity to promote grassroots football as well. This is where the latent talent is and it would be great to give them an opportunity to develop,” he said.

Harambee Stars coach Sebastien Migne said the sponsorship has come at a crucial time and will boost morale in the team.

“We are going for a major competition and need the support of everyone, sponsors, government, media and all stakeholders and this is good gesture coming at this time,” said the Frenchman.

He defended the team’s decision to train in France ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations finals.
