Couple Arrested For Proposing In Shopping Mall

A young couple have been arrested in Iran over a romantic proposals in a shopping centre.

The pair were arrested for offending Islamic principles with the the video of the man’s romantic proposal, according to local media. 

The arrests were reportedly made after footage of the man’s proposal in a central Iran shopping mall in the city of Arak went viral.

The footage shows the man proposing amid a red petals arranged in the shape of a heart, surrounded by red and white balloons.

A crowd of onlookers cheer and applaud as the surprised woman accepts the proposal, he slips a ring on her finger and the couple embrace.

The couple, whom local reports did not identify, were said to have fallen foul of Islamic religious mores

Islamic Republic News Agency journalist Sobhan Hassanvand tweeted the video, writing that both were arrested for a marriage proposal in contravention of Islamic principles.

The public proposal had drawn the reaction from authorities because it was based on “decadent” Western culture, according to Hassanvand’s post. 

He added that the pair were later released on bail.

Public displays of affection are prohibited in Iran’s strict Islamic laws, which also forbid gender mixing in public places.

Relationships between Western and Muslim people in Iran are also forbidden. 

Its official advice warns women to respect local dress codes.

It cautions that visitors must be discreet when travelling with a friend of the opposite sex or an unmarried partner.
