Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech is confident the Gunners have the quality to qualify for the Europa League quarter-finals despite Thursday’s 3-1 away loss to Rennes in the first leg of their last-16 clash.

Unai Emery’s men took an early lead against the home side but tides changed when defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos was red-carded just before half time allowing the Ligue 1 side to take charge of the match and seal an important victory.

But Cech, who retires at the end of the season, believes their away goal could prove crucial when the teams meet again next week.

“We can still overcome a two-goal deficit because in the end the goal we scored might play a big part, but we made it a bit harder for ourselves,” he told the club’s website.

“We created chances … so we have to be positive,” Cech added. “We’ve done it in the past where we’ve been 2-0 down and have overcome the deficit.”

Arsenal have no time to lick their wounds following that defeat as focus quickly shifts to the English Premier League match against Manchester United on Sunday at the Emirates Stadium.

The Red Devils are currently on place above Arsenal in 4th place and a point better than the Londoners.
