How Waiguru’s sweetheart saved her face in adversity

One of Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru’s toughest moments in her career was when she was caught up in the first NYS scandal of 2015.

At the time, she was the Cabinet Secretary in charge of Devolution and Planning and was accused of overseeing the loss of Ksh791 million.

The mood of the country was that someone had to take responsibility for the loss, and all the heat turned on Waiguru.

Following a public outcry and passionate lobbying by Deputy President William Ruto and AU Envoy Raila Odinga a number of MPs began the process of impeaching the then CS.

Her Fiancé Kamotho Waiganjo, who was a member of the Commission for Implementation of the Constitution (CIC) moved to court to challenge the constitutionality of a bid by Parliament to impeach Waiguru.

On his Facebook page, he dismissed claims that his decision was influenced by his relationship with Uhuru.

“Online people are free to criticise. I mean, we have also instituted court action against MPs and governors and I’m still friends with some of them. Talk to the chairman (Charles Nyachae) and ask him how decisions are made at the commission,” he defended his actions at the time.

Years later, the two lovebirds got engaged in a traditional ceremony after Waiganjo proposed to Waiguru at the lavish Lord Erroll Hotel in Runda, Nairobi.

Speaking on the engagement, Waiguru disclosed, “I was completely surprised. We had not been talking about formalising our relationship so I did not expect it. We had just come from holidays and were celebrating his birthday as we do with close friends every year.”

“It was a beautiful ceremony. The time was right for us to take our relationship to the next level,” Kamotho told The Standard after the event.
