“Not Mine!” Speaker Justin Muturi Says He Did Not Write Letter Preventing MPs From Probing JKIA Takeover

National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi, on Thursday, finally shed more light on claims that he barred a Parliamentary committee from investigating Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) take over by a National airline.

Several local media houses reported that Muturi had blocked the Parliamentary Investments Committee (PIC) from the investigations on grounds that it was the mandate of the Transport Committee.

During a Parliamentary proceeding, Hon. Nassir Abdullswamad, who is a member of PIC, raised concerns over reports appearing in the media that the committee should not touch on JKIA Issues.

“According to the media SMSs that have been coming in from both the Standard Media and Capital…they are saying that you have instructed the PIC and you have put us on the sidebar,” stated the legislator.

In response, Muturi explained that matters involving two parliamentary committees were serious enough not to warrant an SMS communication.

“On matters of this nature I’m sure those of you who have been with me since the 11th Parliament would know that communication of this nature, on a matter involving two committees, is not one in which we would commit through SMS. I am never in the habit of communicating through SMSs, even WhatsApp.

“This is a matter that we would come and do a proper communication from the chair. If a matter of that nature arises I would not even write a letter. How would I direct that a committee stops its work?” posed Muturi.

He further disclosed that he had chaired the PIC committee for five years while asking MPs to desist from sharing parliamentary matters to the media on the side.

“I have not in any way communicated to your committee or any other committee,” he continued.

An earlier report by The Star claimed that Muturi had sent a letter to the Transport committee chairman David Pkosing, MP Pokot South, disclosing that PIC could only deal with a query arising from the examination of audited reports and accounts of Kenya Airports Authority or a special audit.
