Why Alberto Costa, a UK MP lost his job in th ongoing Brexit fiasco

A new Brexit fiasco erupted today as Tory MP lost his job with the government because he tried to protect EU citizens over the ongoing Brexit debate.

Alberto Costa is understood to have quit his role as an aide to the Scotland Office today after putting forward an amendment in the House of Commons.

Theresa May is now set to accept his amendment which calls for “a joint UK-EU commitment” to protect the rights of expats, even in No Deal in a humiliating climbdown.

Yet Mr Costa is resigning his role anyway because people who work for the government are not allowed to table their own amendments.

Anna Soubry

It came after chaotic scenes in which Home Secretary Sajid Javid revealed the government would accept the amendment on live TV – only to be told Theresa May had said the opposite.

Former Tory MP Anna Soubry claimed Mr Costa had been “sacked”, not resigned as government sources indicated.

She tweeted: “Alberto has shown great courage in tabling this Amendment I was proud to support.

“Govt has accepted it but then sacked him – which is nasty and petty.

“Pretty much says everything about how badly broken our politics are.”
