KRA on Spot Over The Forged Stamps At Africa Spirits.

As Kenya Revenue Authority is planning to take over a multibillion ethanol plant in Thika following a raid at the factory that exposed how the giant spirit producer was evading taxes worth Kshs6 billions, insiders privy to the investigations reveled a rot in the Tax authority.

It is alleged that Millions of revenue stamps seized from a distillery in Thika could have been stolen from the Kenya Revenue Authority rather than faked, as earlier claimed. Investigators are working to resolve the puzzle of how the Sh6 billion worth of the duty receipts left the KRA’s printing premises without the corresponding payments being received.

The owner of the distillery, Africa Spirits Ltd, billionaire Humphrey Kariuki, has been questioned by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) several times. “We have confirmed the authenticity of the seized stamps but it has not been established how they were acquired by the suspect without receipt of applicable duties,” said the source, who could not be named as they are not allowed to speak for KRA.
