Ethics and Anti- Corruption Commission detectives confisticate governor’s car

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) detectives, on Friday, seized a car that was being used by unidentified persons presumed to be Wajir Governor Mohamed Abdi Mahamud’s allies.

It was alleged that the car, a Toyota Land Cruiser V8, was purchased using government resources but was being used by individuals whose identities are unknown to run personal errands.

The detectives spent the better part of Friday at Delta house where the car bearing registration plates KCQ 004U was parked and conducted a search before driving it to their offices along Valley Road, Nairobi.

This incident comes exactly a week after the Supreme Court overturned the decision of the High Court and the Court of Appeal to nullify Mahamud’s election as the governor of Wajir.

Mahamud had moved to the Supreme Court seeking a ruling regarding his election over allegations that he did not possess the prerequisite academic qualifications. The ruling was the outcome of a split vote with four judges ruling in the governor’s favour while two dissented.

In the majority were Justice Mohamed Ibrahim, JB Ojwang’, Smokin Wanjala and Njoki Ndung’u while Chief Justice David Maraga and Justice Isaac Lenaola dissented.

Reading the minority ruling, Maraga stated that a degree was required for one to be eligible to run for election.

“The degree is a prerequisite for election as a governor and a deputy governor. The appellant did not possess the required documents, his election is therefore null and void,” the CJ pronounced.

Speaking to journalists outside the Supreme Court after the ruling, Mahamud expressed his gratitude to his team, adding that it was time for Wajir people to work together.
