The current tough economic times have seen many choose crime as a way of living with human trafficking among crimes to bring a quick buck.

To this effect, a Kenyan and an Indian have been detained for suspicion of being part of a human trafficking syndicate and will be held five days for police to complete their probe.

Patel Kutulkumar Govindbhai and Patroba Odhiambo Tobia appeared in court on Thursday.

It is alleged that they involved in a networked syndicate which makes and issue fake American visas and Kenyan passports.

The government had asked for 15 days to detain the two but only this period was granted.

Through lawyer Abdul Agonga, the two told the court that the offence they were likely to be charged with was bailable and that a 15-day detention period was too long.

Mr Agonga said on Thursday that there was no compelling reason to deny his clients their freedom.

This follows an incident in November last year, when 79 foreigners were rescued from human traffickers at Mlango Kubwa area in Starehe Constituency, Nairobi.

Police said the victims aged between 19-45 were discovered following a tip off.

They included 75 Comorans, three Ugandans and a Congolese.

Another 90 had been rescued from different parts of Nairobi the previous day.

Two months before that, 10 Ugandans were intercepted being allegedly smuggled to the Middle East.

Director of Immigration Alexander Muteshi revealed that a Kenyan was arrested over the incident and would be arraigned in court.

In an affidavit, immigration officer Gilbert Nawate said the two were arrested on February 20 at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi.

Mr Nawate said the two are believed to be part of a group that facilitates the movement of the people through the airport, with the syndicate counterfeiting the visas of several countries.

It is suspected that they are involved in the smuggling of people to various destinations using forged visas and passports.

Police confiscated the suspects’ phones and other items for forensic examination.

Milimani Principal Magistrate Bernard Nzakyo said the case will be mentioned on February 26.
