Africa Spirits Risk KRA Take Over For Unpaid Taxes.

African Spirits Limited (ASL) owned by Kenya’s billionaire Humphrey Kariuki is one of the largest alcohol manufacturing plants in East Africa and, ironically, has been one of the most vocal in the fight against counterfeits and illicit liquor.

Billionaire Humphrey Kariuki’s troubles seem to be taking another route after the Kenya Revenue Authority and police said a liquor firm associated with him could have dodged taxes amounting to Sh6 billion.

The revenue collector has started a recovery process which will see Africa Spirits in Thika taken over by Kenya revenue Authority as they eye targets to recover Ksh6 billion tax that was lost in the manufacturer’s tax evasion scheme.

“The law is very clear; if you are caught with fake stamps and once we have legally verified that a law has been broken, Section 31 of Finance Act 2018 gives us powers to seize the plant and the goods,” KRA Commissioner for Intelligence James Mburu
