Peter Terer, 24, clearly goes on to show how you are not defined by what you are, but rather what you can do as he went on to win the overall prize at the Eldoret leg of The Standard County Golf Classic played at the par 71 Eldoret Club over the weekend.

The Nandi County government employee who took up the gentleman’s sport seven months ago, posted a commendable round total of 42 stableford points to prevail over 100 golfers during the tournament sponsored by Standard Group PLC (SGL).

On the outward nine, Terer carded 17 stableford points which included three pars, three bogeys, one double-bogey and scratched two holes. On the inward nine, things looked up for him as he rolled in a birdie, parred four holes, picked two bogeys and a similar number of double-bogeys for an additional 25 stableford points to seal his deserved victory.

The course was challenging for both resident and visiting golfers due to what most of them blamed on the dry course conditions.

Things were made worse if one’s shot ended up in the rough or trees that line the fairways and several water features including River Sosian which snakes through the golf course.

“I had a great round though my tee-shots were a bit wild. Luckily, I compensated it with great recovery shots coupled with solid putting,” said Terer of his win.

“Earlier as I prepared to set out for my round, my club (Nandi Bears) vice-captain Simon Chepkwony asked me to pray before I teed-off. Something that I have never done before. I made a silent prayer by the tee-box. Alas! God answered my prayers with this major win after such a short stint in the game of golf. I thank the sponsors The Standard Group for offering me this opportunity through their great sponsorship.”

“I fumbled with my game in the opening nine since I hardly play here, but after familiarising myself with the course I had a better second nine thanks to my five and eight irons did the trick for me iced with a solid putting,” Terer said.
