KENYANS HAVE called out Western media after it was claimed that a black leopard whose images were taken by British wildlife photographer Will Burrad-Lucas, was the first sighting in 100 years.

Many publications reported this as the first “black leopard spotted in Africa for 100 years,” which has caused many Kenyans to call out this error, with locals claiming to see black leopards in different parts of Laikipia, The Daily Nation reports.

Burrad-Lucas posted the images on his blog, writing: “For me, no animal is shrouded in more mystery, no animal more elusive, and no animal more beautiful.

“For many years, they remained the stuff of dreams and of farfetched stories told around the campfire at night. Nobody I knew had ever seen one in the wild and I never thought that I would either.”

Despite much of the media crediting the photojournalist for being the first in a century to capture an image of a black panther, The Daily Nation noted that in 2013, their photojournalist Phoebe Okall, photographed the animal at Ol Jogi Conservancy.

In addition, conservationist Mordecai Ogada claimed he and his colleagues spotted a similar animal in Ol Maalo, Laikipia, during a research for his Master’s project in early 2001.

Many took to social media to share their thoughts, with Apollo Mugash, tweeting: “Same old song, same performers, same setting. Remember every other physical feature in Africa existed only after validation by a Whiteman. So no point stressing the fact that similar leopard had been captured by Kenya’s Daily Nation photographer as early as 2013”.

Another social media user said: “Finally a white man has discovered that Kenya has a black leopard/panther..mind you a daily nation journalist photographed the same in Kenricho in 2013, the same way they ‘discovered’ mount Kenya and Lake Victoria”
