You want to demonstrate? Deposit Sh1.5million first

Kenyans are so volatile. Once they feel aggrieved by a given decision or a set of discomforting events, they react.

Such peaceful protests usually snowball into violent confrontations with police officers, resulting into deaths of innocent civilians.

Not so fast

In Malawi, you will have to make a $15,000 to obtain a permit for protesting. The money, according to Malawi government, takes care of damages brought about by the demonstration.

Though the civil rights organizations decried the move, not much has changed.

Diplomatic spat

The concerns of civil society were echoed in a leaked British diplomatic cable that accused Mr Mutharika of “becoming ever more autocratic and intolerant of criticism”.

The decision in 2011 sparked off a diplomatic spat that saw both countries withdraw their ambassadors, while London suspended around £19 million ($30.7 million, 21.7 million euros) of budgetary aid meant for anti-poverty programmes in one of the world’s poorest countries.

No apologies

Britain said the aid suspension was “to address UK concerns over economic management and governance”, but Mr Mutharika insisted Malawi was not being singled out and would not apologise.

“It’s certainly not a possibility. What do we apologise for? Here is an envoy who insulted our country,” Mr Mutharika said.
