Police were responsible in Baby Pendo killing, court rules

The inquest into the Baby Samantha Pendo killing court ruling has highly implicated police.

On Thursday, a Kisumu court recommended that the Directorate of Criminal Investigation take action against police commanders in charge of the operation.

Resident Magistrate Beryl Omollo said her in her ruling that the evidence produced in court overwhelmingly indicts police for the death of the minor.

They include former Kisumu County Commander Titus Yoma and four other officers.

The court also wants action taken against a platoon of 30 GSU officers who had been deployed to Nyalenda led by their commander Nzioka Mutune.

Baby Pendo died in August 2017 after she was reportedly hit on the head by anti riot police who stormed her parents house in Nyalenda slums, Kisumu.

The parents: Mr Abanja and Ms Lencer Achieng and nine civilians, including neighbours, gave their statements in the case.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) directed the inquest after police investigations failed to point to the culprits.
