West Pokot Governor, Lonyangapuo under siege

Tension has gripped West Pokot-Turkana border after suspected bandits attacked a convoy of Governor John Lonyangapuo at Lami Nyeusi area on Tuesday while heading for a peace meeting.

The entourage had governor Lonyangapuo, three local MPs Samuel Moroto (Kapenguria), Peter Lochakapong and Mark Lomunok and some security officials who were heading to a security meeting at Takaiwa when they were ambushed by police officers attached to the Kainuk Administration Police station in Turkana County.

A heavy exchange of gun fire broke out between Lonyangapou’s security team and the officers, who were allegedly carrying a patient to hospital.

Vehicles in the motorcade that carried the West Pokot County boss and the County commander of police Matthew Kuto, were sprayed with bullets as they passed through the area while the rest of the other cars which were carrying West Pokot County commissioner Apollo Okello, journalists and County Executive Members (CECs) were forced to retreat.

The team was heading to Takaiwa Village where one person was killed and more than 500 heads of cattle stolen by cattle rustlers on Sunday afternoon.
