Rio Ferdinand gives his verdict on Man Utd’s Champions League chances after PSG defeat

Rio Ferdinand reckons Manchester United should concentrate on finishing in the top four after they were left with a Champions League mountain to climb.

The Red Devils slipped to a 2-0 defeat at home to PSG – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first in charge – as goals from Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappe put the visitors firmly in control.

United must score at twice in Paris on March 6 if they are to stand any chance of reaching the last eight.

They will have to do without Paul Pogba, who will miss the return leg after receiving a red card in the dying minutes of the Old Trafford reverse.

United legend Ferdinand believes the Frenchman’s dismissal is the final nail in the coffin for Solskjaer’s side.

Speaking on BT Sport, he said: “They’ve got to think about going forward and think about finishing in the top four. This game, this tie is over after the red card.”

Pogba has enjoyed a new lease of life under Solskjaer and Ferdinand admits United will struggle to fill the void.

He added: “That’s a sign of how far he’s come in the last couple of months.

“Now he’s being man-marked on the biggest stage by Marquinhos.

“Then he’s really got to show his quality, how do you deal with being man-marked.

“Today he didn’t work it out and got frustrated and sent off. But more of that is going to come from Pogba because of what he’s doing on a weekly basis in the Premier League.”
