Students who scored low grades to join colleges at government’s cost

Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates who did not qualify to join university will have now an opportunity to study for free in colleges.

According to a new plan by the Ministry of Education, the government will sponsor a fraction of the sudent’s  fees and will still be eligible to get a governmental loan that will help them settle the arrairs.

A report by The Star indicated  that the Ministry of Education has estimated the entire college education cost for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students at KShs20 Billion. According to the Ministry, school fees in TVET institutions averages at Kshs 56,420 per sudents each every year.

The report revealed that in order to settle the fees for the students, the State will clear Kshs 30,000 initial payment while the balance will be taken care of by a governmental loan of up to KShs 40,000 which the students will be eligible to benefit from.

In this arrangement, the loan will be available to TVET students just like their University counterparts. This is an effort by the government to bridge the discrimination gap in transition to higher education.

In the past, the higher education transition had favoured students who performed well, therefore, neglecting the future of many others.

“We are reforming the sector to make it relevant as it is crucial for the Big Four agenda,” stated Education CS AminaMohammed

In last year’s KCSE exams, 651,189 students who scored C grade and below were eligible to join tertiary institutions.

244,436 of them scored D+ and Ds and were eligible for craft certificate courses in TVET institutions.
