Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko on Tuesday assured striking county government workers that they will receive their payments by end of the month.

The governor has assured striking county staff that his administration is ready to honour a deal signed by the two parties.

He was addressing some of the 13000 workers who had staged demonstrations outside City Hall to demand SRC to give the County a go-ahead to implement the CBA as ruled by Industrial Court Judge Nelson Abwodha in November last year.

The workers claim that the CBA was not honored in their last pay and question why the SRC agreed to the CBA then failed to honour the court ruling.

“I know there is a problem. Your union leaders have looked at the county supplementary budget and they know the money is there but the only problem is SRC, not me,” Sonko said.

“I want to appeal to the Nairobi County staff to go back to work because all their issues are being addressed. We are in consultations with all the relevant offices, including the Salaries and Remuneration Commission to see that this CBA is implemented,” said Sonko.

However, the governor backed the workers saying the strike is within their right.

“I do not oppose or disagree with their quest for good salaries. However, we all need to address this issue together in a dialogue,” said the governor.

Ni hiyo kipengele kidogo tuSRC na Treasury tukae nao watusaidie mpate pesa zenu.” (It’s just a small clause that together with the SRC and Treasury, need to meet and they will help us get your money.)

The Governor also appealed to the MCAs not to frustrate development projects by his administration in their respective wards.

Kenya County Government Worklers Union national Secretary General  Roba Duba said the workers will remain on strike until the CBA is implemented.
