The Mombasa County government is on a fact-finding study for it independent Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.
According to County transport executive Tawfiq Balala, the Mombasa BRT system is unlike the Nairobi BRT which is being implemented in coordination with the national government. The Mombasa County, he said, is putting its own efforts.
“We have limited resources and that is why we are moving at a slow pace, but we are determined to achieve this. We trying to revise all possible ways to see the project being implemented,” said Mr Balala.

He said the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has partnered with the county to carry out traffic surveys that would help in the implementation of the project.
The first phase of Mombasa’s BRT system will include four buses located at main junctions leading to the central business district.
The buses are expected to take seven minutes to move in the entire CBD, allowing the public to spend less time moving to/from work and home.
