Crisis in Health Sector as More Nurses Join the Strike

Kenya is once again headed to a week of paralysis in hospitals as more nurses join the ongoing strike called by Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) General Secretary Seth Panyako.

The paralysis intensified when the nurses under the ministry of health also vowed to down their tools and join their fellow nurses.

According to the statement that was released by KNUN, nurses at Mathare National Teaching and Referral Hospital, Port Health and Blood Transfusion Centre and National Spinal Injury Referral Hospital should from February 11 join others in the strike.

Nurses are also expected to strike in five counties including Garrisa, Samburu, Kirinyaga, Kwale and Embu, in what they term as failure by the County Governments to implement their return to work formula that was signed last year.

The KNUN called on nurses to go on strike on Monday, where 11 counties were affected, some of which have acceded to the demands of the health workers.

According to Panyako, the strike in the counties began as a result of major concerns that were raised by nurses that must be addressed in order to call off the industrial action.

The strike came as a result of the expiry of notice that was issued to County governments and the National government December last year over the Collective Bargain Agreement (CBA).

However, the Clinical officers are expected to hold a meeting in the course of the week to decide on the way forward over disagreement in CBA negotiation.
