Only 90,744 2018 KCSE students set to join institution of higher learning

The government has announced that 90,744 students who scored a grade of C+ and above in the 2018 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) will join institutions of higher learning.

A total of 651,000 students sat the 2018 KCSE exam which means a total 561,000 students will either have to repeat, pursue diploma courses or join Vocational and Technical Training institutes.

Education CS Amina Mohammed said the government is keen on total transition for all students and said all candidates should apply to the different institutions.

CS Amina directed the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) to process the applications on merit.

“The Placement Service will process the application on merit taking into account students performances, choices, available capacity and affirmative action for gender, disability and persons with disabilities and candidates from marginalised regions,” said the Cabinet Secretary.

She said the application process, which will be online, will take place until February 23.

“The process will culminate in the final selection of students for admission to universities and TVET institutions which will be concluded on April 12, 2019,” she added.

“Selection to universities will cater only for the KCSE candidates while placement to TVET institutions will take care of other previous years up to the year 2000.”

The minister said there will be a one month window for students to apply for transfers.

“To ensure candidates join courses and institutions of their choice, a one month window will be opened in May 2019 for the students to apply for inter-institutional transfers,” she said.
