UoN tops Kenya and Eastern Africa on global Universities ranking

The University of Nairobi (UoN) is the only Kenyan University among the top 1,000 universities in the world in 2018.

The survey done by Webometrics bases its rankings on universities’ presence on the web and their global impact.

UoN emerged at position 990 on the list, with other Kenyan institutions of higher learning coming in from position 1596- Kenyatta University, onwards.

This is however a drop for UoN, which was last year at position 851 globally.

Led by Harvard University, the top three universities in the world are from the U.S followed by UK’s University of Oxford.

Africa’s first University- University of Cape Town, comes in at position 272 in the world. South Africa is home to all the top five African Universities (Cape Town, Witwatersrand, Pretoria, Stellenbosch, Kwazulu Natal).

At the African ranking, UoN comes in at position nine, leading the Eastern Africa pack that is followed by Makerere University of Uganda (position 1033), Kenyatta University and the University of Dar Es Salam (position 1861).

Similarly, Strathmore University has emerged as Kenya’s leading private University at position 4512.

The annual publication of universities rankings by Webometrics is said to aim at, “promoting academic web presence, supporting the Open Access initiatives for increasing significantly the transfer of scientific and cultural knowledge generated by the universities to the whole Society.”
