Babu Owino: KQ must focus on its core business; leave JKIA alone

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has publicly given his stand in regard to the JKIA takeover proposal.

The vocal MP says that he will mobilize  his colleagues in parliament to reject his proposal.

The MP revealed that he is not confident with the  KQ management in regard to their background and records of losses.

Babu Owino earlier today issued a statement to declare his stand as well as to call upon the president to dismiss the proposal.

Here is his full statement.

Our attention has been drawn to the Privately Initiated Investment Proposal by the national carrier Kenya Airways to take over the operations of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for a thirty year concession period.

In their proposal, KQ suggests to form a Special Purpose Vehicle that would bring together themselves and the Kenya Airports Authority to operate, maintain and develop JKIA.

We are deeply concerned by this proposal and caution the KAA in the strongest terms possible from considering such a concession to KQ.

The carrier still has several questions regarding its own management lingering in the background over its disastrous decisions in the recent past that saw massive retrenchments, staff pay cuts, industrial action and asset disposal to keep the carrier afloat.

KQ has been in the past a beneficiary of government bail out due to its poor strategic financial decisions. Granting this concession is akin to giving a convicted drunk driver the keys to your car!

As the Member of Parliament for JKIA, I vehemently reject this proposal and will mobilize my colleagues in parliament against it.

In closing, I call upon the President to veto this proposal and save the tax payers from any further losses at the hands of KQ’s management.
