Arsenal to pay tribute to Kenyan fan shot by police in Kibera

Arsenal is poised to do a citation in honour of the late Carilton David Maina, a loyal Kenya fan, when they take on Cardiff City on Tuesday, January 29, in the Premier League at Emirates stadium. The team will pay tribute to Maina, who was gunned down in Kibera on Saturday, December 22, 2018, by police in unclear circumstances.

“Maina adored Arsenal and watched every match he could. He was also a talented player, recently a goalkeeper for Gor Mahia FC, and was also a TedEx presenter, role model, future leader and was loved by all,” stated the Arsenal FC official programme.

In a statement , Amnesty International Kenya referred to the incident as the “hallmark of an extrajudicial killing.” “Carilton’s tragic death showcases how extra judicial killings are endemic in Kenya, especially in urban low-income areas. In the past three months, Civil society organizations and community justice centers have documented over 30 such cases,” said Irungu Houghton, Executive Director, Amnesty International Kenya.

“Tonight’s official match day programme for Arsenal vs Cardiff hours Carilton David Maina who was shot dead by polices in unclear circumstances,” sports personality Carol Radull tweeted. Arsenal is fifth on the table with 44 points out of 23 matches played, and will need maximum points when they clash against the Bluebirds to ward off Manchester United.
