Chelsea fans were glad to see their new striker Gonzalo Higuain in action on Sunday afternoon and those gathered at Stamford Bridge were hoping to see their new Argentinian ace hit the back of the net against Sheffield Wednesday. It has now transpired that Higuain was offered the chance to get on the scoresheet, but turned the opportunity down when it was presented to him.
When Sam Hutchinson brought down Cesar Azpilicueta and Chelsea were given a penalty, Willian grabbed hold of the ball and went towards the Argentine, offering him the chance to take it. In an interview with Chelsea TV, Willian explained what happened:
Interviewer: “Were you gonna give him the ball there or did he ask you for it?”
Willian: “No I wanted to give him the ball.”
“You offered it did you?”
“Yeah, yeah.”
“And he said no, you take it?”
“Yes. I wanted him to score his first goal today. It will come soon.”
Higuain missed a couple of half-chances throughout the game but as a new player into the side it may take some time to gel with his new teammates. This gesture will have gone a long way to helping him settle into the dressing room.
Chelsea went onto win the game 3-0, with Willian adding another to his tally, whilst Higuain was replaced by Olivier Giroud after 82 minutes. Chelsea are back in action on Wednesday night as they travel to Bournemouth in the Premier League with Higuain looking to bag his first goal for the club.
