He is the man of the moment! He is the talk of town. Fred Matiang’i has been arguably the best performing CS in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Cabinet since 2013. The no nonsense man has headed three key ministries and he has managed to successfully ride against dangerous tides.

Nobody can argue that he deserves his appointment as the Chair to the National Development Implementation and Communication Committee. In his new role, Matiang’i is a super minister or in other words the head boy in the Cabinet.

Some people have suggested that the Interior CS has now taken over the roles of the Deputy President William Ruto. Whether this is true or false depends on whom you will ask. A certain vocal MP recently said that Ruto is now a Deputy President without portfolio.

I am now hearing some people advising Matiang’i to run for President in 2022. Until last year, the Presidential race was shaping up to a one man race. Ruto was making whistle-stops across the country launching different projects and setting up his campaign team.

But things have changed in the past few weeks starting with some noise from Mt. Kenya region led by David Murathe and now the elevation of Fred Matiang’i. So if Matiang’i was to run against Ruto in 2022, would he have a chance?
