PHOTOS: Raila attends the inauguration of Newly elected DRC president Felix Thsikendi

Opposition party leader Raila Odinga today attended the inauguration of newly elected DRC president Felix Thsikendi in Kinshasa.

Raila Odinga  attended the ceremony in the company of a Kenyan delegation,  at the Palace of the Nation, the seat of the presidency, starting at noon (1100 GMT).

This is said to be the first peaceful transition of power in the history of the Democratic Republic of Congo, which gained independence from Belgium in 1960.

Felix  Tshisekedi, will be taking the helm from Kabila who ruled the country for 18 years, succeeding his father Laurent-Desire, who was assassinated in 2001.

Tshisekedi was declared winner of the thrice-delayed election with 38.5% of the vote, while Martin Fayulu, who also comes from the opposition, was credited with 34.8%.

Following his victory, Raila said that the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo spoke in the December 2018 elections and their choices were affirmed by the relevant institutions namely the Electoral Commission and the Supreme Court.

Odinga congratulated President elect Mr Felix Tshisekedi on his vicory and wished him all the best as he embarks on the difficult task of putting the DRC on the path of democracy, unity and prosperity.

He also congratulated President Joseph Kabila for presiding over the very first peaceful transfer of power in the DRC since independence.  Raila also noted that Congo’s success is Africa’s success.
