Has President Uhuru’s latest move just proved that transport CS James Macharia is incompetent?

Macharia has had some sort of a turbulent period in the Transport Ministry. This even saw him get summoned by members of parliament back in December.

Under his tenure as CS, road accidents in Kenya increased at an alarming rate with his ministry often called out for not being able to bring back sanity to our roads.

It actually took the intervention of Interior CS Fred Matiang’i for Kenya’s transport sector to be streamlined.

Matiang’i spearheaded a massive crackdown on the chaotic matatu industry and pushed for strict enforcement of the Michuki rules to restore order on Kenyans roads.

It is Matiang’is intervention and bold move to save Kenya’s transport sector that as apparently won President Kenyatta’s heart with the head of state issuing an executive order regarding the management and coordination of national transport and safety.

Uhuru moved all NTSA operations to the Interior Ministry.

Matiang’i’s bold move was interpreted by some quarters as encroaching on the mandate of the Transport ministry.

Under Uhuru’s new directive, the Interior Ministry will oversee the registration and licensing of vehicles, inspection, regulation of public service vehicles and implementation of new curriculum for driving schools.

The Transport department will remain with a leaner responsibility, including national roads development policy, mechanical and transport services, as well as policy on axle load control.

Should other Cabinet Secretaries be worried?
