Five years ago this July Liverpool reluctantly let Luis Suarez leave the Reds in order to realise his dream of playing for Barcelona.
In three-and-a-half seasons at Anfield, the Uruguayan striker set the league alight through his electric runs, tenacity, and eye for goals from anywhere on the pitch, bagging 82 goals in 133 games in all competitions.
Suarez may have just come up short in his bid to lift the Premier League trophy, but he most certainly left his mark on the English game.
For example in his final 2013/14 campaign he became only the third player to score 31 Premier League goals in a 38-game season – Mo Salah has since leapfrogged Suarez, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Alan Shearer with 32 goals – en route to winning the Golden Boot and both Player of the Season awards.
Now, in an interview with German football magazine 11FREUNDE – quotes via Liverpool Echo – the Liverpool legend has revealed his fondness for his former employers.
“Anyone who has ever played in Liverpool remains connected to the club for a lifetime. The team plays terrific football and I am very interested in how they will do this year. I think we can still be prepared for a lot.”
Asked if he would be interested in playing under Jurgen Klopp, the striker replied:
“Currently we work for two different clubs so that’s not an issue for me at the moment. But sure every player would like to train under Jurgen Klopp.”
Since swapping Merseyside for Barcelona, Suarez has gone on to lift three La Liga titles, the Champions League, four Copa del Reys, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.
There’s a chance that Suarez could face Liverpool later this season in the Champions League, but first Barcelona do battle with Lyon in the last-16, while the Reds face German giants Bayern Munich in what promises to be a tasty tie.
