Why Midfielder Mousa Dembele Wanted To Leave Tottenham

Mousa Dembele’s career at Tottenham is over. Spurs confirmed on Thursday that the 31-year-old Belgian midfielder has left the club to move to China.

Dembele has joined Chinese club Guangzhou.

Announcing the deal on the club’s website, Tottenham have posted the following:

We have reached agreement with Chinese Super League side Guangzhou R&F for the transfer of Mousa Dembele, subject to international clearance.

We wish Mousa all the best for the future.

How much did Spurs get for Dembele?
According to the BBC, Dembele, who was out of contract at Tottenham this summer, joined Guangzhou in an 11 million pound deal.

The sense is that Spurs have done extremely well by selling Dembele for that fee.

This season Dembele had only made 13 appearances for Spurs

Why Mousa Dembele wanted to leave
When looking at the deal from Dembele’s point of view, Belgian journalist Kristof Terreur has examined why the player was keen on moving to China.

Some may accuse Dembele of moving from the most competitive league in the world to one of the weaker leagues.

Yet, according to Terreur, that’s perfect for Dembele. Writing on social media, Terreur explained why Dembele wanted to leave Spurs this January.
