Celtic have joined the race to sign Everton midfielder James McCarthy, as per a report by Birmingham Live.

The 28-year-old is fit again after a double fracture of his right leg and is set to leave Everton on loan this month to regain his fitness.

Championship duo West Brom and Villa are both keen on him to help bolster their respective midfields. However, Celtic are hoping to lure him to his boyhood club.

The experienced midfielder started his career at Scottish side Hamilton Academical and went onto play over 100 games for them before being snapped up by Wigan Athletic in 2009 for a fee believed to be just under £1.2 million.

McCarthy was part of the Latics squad who won the FA Cup in 2014. He joined Everton for around £13 million in September 2013 and has since played just under 150 times in his five seasons at Goodison Park.

He is also a Republic of Ireland international with 41 caps to his name. McCarthy went to Euro 2016 and played all four of their matches in France.

There is no doubt McCarthy is a talented player and he needs to start playing games again after his injury. Therefore, a loan move away would be ideal for him this month.

Both West Brom and Aston Villa are in the hunt for promotion and the Baggies are doing better so could potentially be a more interesting proposition for McCarthy. However, could his head be tempted by a switch to Celtic to help them retain their Scottish Premiership title this season?
