Deputy President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga joined Catholic Church members at Uzima University grounds for the installation of Homa Bay Bishop Philip Anyolo as Archbishop of Kisumu.

The event comes amid heightened political tensions in the ruling coalition over 2022 plans.

Political talk was expected to take centre stage at the religious function as DP Ruto and Mr Odinga’s lieutenants have torn into each with accusations concerning the next presidential election and Mr Odinga’s handshake with President Uhuru Kenyatta.

DP Ruto presented the gift during the installation ceremony for Rev. Philip Anyolo as the new Catholic archbishop in Kisumu.

Ruto further indicated that the present was on behalf of himself and President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Rev. Anyolo takes over from Bishop Zacchaeus Okoth who has been at the helm for the past 50 years.

The Saturday ceremony is taking place at Uzima College, an institution that is the brainchild of the outgoing Bishop Okoth.

Bishop Okoth is renowned for his vocalness on social issues such as contraception which he was strongly against, treatment of HIV/AIDS patients and education of the girl child.

He was ordained as a priest in 1968 and leaves after five decades of fiery rule, praised and criticised in equal measure.

Other leaders at the ceremony include CSs Eugene Wamalwa (Devolution) and Raychelle Omamo (Defence); MPs Chris Wamalwa (Kiminini) and Otiende Amolo (Rarieda); Senators Moses Kajwang (Homa Bay) and Moses Wetangula (Bungoma) and Governors Anyang’ Nyong’o (Kisumu) and Wycliffe Wangamati (Bungoma).
