Why Nairobi deputy governor position will remain vacant

Nairobi County Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has nominated five new County Executive Committee (CEC) members.

However the eagerly anticipated naming of the Nairobi City County Deputy Governor has been deferred for ‘two to three weeks’ to allow for ‘consultations’ after Governor Mike Sonko said the opposition coalition, NASA, had requested that he equally considers Ms Rahab Wangui together with his four shortlisted candidates.

Sonko fell out with his former deputy Polycarp Igathe (pictured above left) who resigned to take up Equity Bank (Kenya) managing director.

Mr Sonko nominated 5 new County Executive Committee (CEC) members, to be vetted by the County Assembly. The 5 CECs retained were reshuffled.

Lucia Mulwa is the new nominee for CEC for Education, Youth, Gender, Sports, Culture & Social Services. Dr. Stella Bosire-Otieno is the new nominee for Health. Winfred Gathagu was picked for Finance and Economic Planning.

Pauline Kahiga-Waititu is the new CEC for Public Service Management and Devolution while Sanjeev Kaur Sonia Birdi will be in charge of Environment that has been split with from water.Rahab Ndambuki.

Those retained former ‘The Star’ editor Charles Kerich who will remain in Lands, Urban Planning, Urban Renewal and Housing; Mohamed Dagane remains in charge of Roads, Infrastructure and Transport while Allan Igambi retains Trade, Tourism and Cooperatives. Larry Wambua will be in charge of Agrilculture and Water.

Newton Munene will be in charge of ICT, Communications and e-Government.

He further re-assigned the remaining CECs as follows: Mohammed Dagani (Roads Infrastructure and Transport), Allan Igambi (Trade Tourism and Cooperatives), Larry Wambua (CEC Agriculture and Water) and Newton Munene (CEC ICT, Communication and E-government).Image result for urban planning nairobi

Charles Kerich was however retained as the CEC Lands, Urban Planning, Urban Renewal and Housing.

This comes in the wake of pressure arising from a deemed crisis at the county government.

In October last year, the Nairobi County Public Service Board released a notice calling for applications for five CEC positions.

This was part of Governor Sonko’s move to replace sacked CECs and those whose contracts had expired.
