Meet ‘bum dancing’ DR Congo goalkeeper elected as MP

Former DR Congo international and TP Mazembe star Robert Kidiaba is now the new Member of Parliament for Upper Kitanga in the copper mining city of Lubumbashi, DR Congo.

The former goalkeeper, well known across the world for his ‘bum-hopping’ celebrations, was elected in the just concluded national elections that also saw Joseph Kabila’s 18 year reign as president come to an end.

42 year old Kidiaba began his political journey in 2015 alongside his former Mazembe teammates in defender Jean Kasusula and midfielder Pamphile Mihayo.

Having played 14 years for Mazembe, Kidiaba was part of the team’s greatest triumphs, winning seven league titles, three CAF Champions League crowns as well as reaching the finals of the 2010 FIFA Club World-the first and only final appearance at the global club tournament by an African team.

With 64 national caps, Kidiaba is DR Congo’s most capped player and has represented the nation at five AFCON finals.

He joins an ever growing list of former footballers joining the political world that is highlighted by George Weah rising to become president of Liberia.
