It’s a clean sweep for Liverpool in the Premier League player and manager of the month awards

Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp and Virgil van Dijk have been named as Premier League’s manager and player of the month for December.

The pair scooped the award following a stellar month for the Reds during which they won all seven of their Premier League fixtures to take over from Manchester City at the top of the table.

Four of those wins came with clean sheets, while Van Dijk scored the Reds’ second goal in the 2-0 win at Wolves prior to Christmas. The Dutchman also becomes the first defender to named the Premier League’s player of the month for almost six years since Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen in March 2013.

“I didn’t know that but I’m very proud to win this,” he told the Reds’ website.

“All credit to everyone that helped me win it and the fans who have been supporting me. December was a great month and hopefully we can keep going.

“I’ve improved in every aspect of my game but there is still so much to learn and to get better at.

“I’m working every day to get to where I want to be – I want to get the maximum out of myself. That’s [done] by working every day and making sure that you give everything for the team and for your club.”
