Callum Wilson asking price revealed by expert ‘it’s the going rate’

Callum Wilson will cost Chelsea a premium because he's English, says Simon Stone

That’s the verdict of BBC reporter Simon Stone, who says the Bournemouth striker’s £50m valuation is ‘the going rate for English players’.

Chelsea are on the hunt for a new striker with Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud struggling in front of goal.

And it is believed they are interested in a deal for Wilson, who has bagged 10 goals in 18 appearances for the Cherries this season.

Reports suggest Eddie Howe’s side are demanding £50m for the England international.

Chelsea reportedly want to sign Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson

It remains to be seen whether the Blues decide to spend that much in January, nevertheless, after forking out £58m on Borussia Dortmund winger Christian Pulisic – who will join them at the end of the season.

Stone, though, thinks Bournemouth’s £50m valuation of Wilson is fair considering the homegrown quota Premier League clubs have to meet.

“That’s the going rate for English players,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Football Daily podcast.

But the Blues will have to fork out £50m to sign him

“There’s a premium because every team needs a certain amount of English players to comply with UEFA regulations in terms of squads, so you are looking at something like [£50m) for a player who’s unproven at the highest level.”

Morata and Giroud have come out short for Chelsea this term, scoring a mere 14 goals between them in 2018/19.

While Giroud was signed as a backup option under Antonio Conte in January 2018, Morata became the Blues’ club-record signing the previous summer and will be the biggest disappointment for them.

The pair’s woes have led boss Maurizio Sarri to experiment with his frontline and play Eden Hazard as a false nine.

Maurizio Sarri doesn't think Alvaro Morata or Olivier Giroud are 'the real deal', says Stone

Stone believes the writing is on the wall for Morata and Giroud, insisting Sarri has come to the conclusion that neither are ‘the real deal’.

“I think Maurizio Sarri’s come to the conclusion that neither Alvaro Morata nor Olivier Giroud are the real deal,” he said.

“And you can’t really see how Chelsea are going to go to the end of the season with Eden Hazard playing as a false nine.”
