Why Man utd may miss a chance to sign Diego Godin

Diego Godin is apparently ready to custard pie Manchester United for the second time this season.

Jose Mourinho wanted to bring the Atletico Madrid centre-back to Old Trafford in the summer when the 32-year-old was in a contract stand-off with his current club but like so many before him, Godin was more interested in using United’s interest as leverage.

No agreement has since been forthcoming, however, so United are sniffing again. But, according to TMW, Ed Woodward has tabled a drastically reduced offer. It is claimed that £6.3million a season was on the table in the summer, but United have knocked £2million off that proposal this month.

Unsurprisingly, Godin isn’t interested. Instead, he may be heading towards Inter Milan, who seem to be interested in anybody and everybody.

Across Madrid, Real are gearing up for a summer overhaul of their squad. Christ knows they need it.

According to The Independent, those plans involve Christian Eriksen. The Tottenham playmaker is entering the final 18 months of his contract and Real reckon there is a deal to be done.

This latest report suggests Real want one of Eriksen or Eden Hazard. Both players are in similar contractual situations but Florentino Perez apparently reckons the Spurs star is ‘more gettable’. Even Daniel Levy might be more willing to do business if indeed there is £100million on the table in the summer when Eriksen enters the final year of his contract.

Eriksen is stalling on a new deal with Spurs because, according to the Daily Mail, he wants to double his current £70,000-a-week deal. The Independent suggests he could get three times that salary at Real, but the 26-year-old is also considering the bigger picture. Eriksen is keen to sample Spain during his prime, but if a move to Real fails to materialise, he is more than happy to remain in north London, despite Bayern Munich’s interest.
