Why Hugo Lloris is out for Tottenham vs Chelsea

Spurs and Chelsea face off in their biggest game of the season so far on Tuesday night at Wembley.

Tottenham host the Blues in their Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg.

When these sides met at Wembley in the league, Tottenham ran out 3-1 victors.

A similar result tonight would put Mauricio Pochettino’s men in a commanding position before the return leg at Stamford Bridge on January 22.

But can Maurizio Sarri lead Chelsea to a positive result?

Whichever side emerges from this tie will likely face Man City in the final. Pep Guardiola’s side face Burton Albion in the other semi.

Hugo Lloris won’t play for Tottenham. Tottenham have taken the surprise decision to confirm one selection before the Chelsea game.

French World Cup winner Hugo Lloris won’t play against the Pensioners.

Instead Argentine stopper Paulo Gazzaniga will start in goal in the massive cup-tie.

Explaining why Gazzaniga is getting the nod, the following is reported on Tottenham’s official website:

Mauricio Pochettino has indicated that Paulo Gazzaniga will remain in goal for our Carabao Cup semi-final against Chelsea.

Paulo, 27, has started all of our domestic cup ties this season including all three rounds of the Carabao Cup so far against Watford, West Ham and Arsenal. He saved two penalties in the shoot-out win against Watford in round three.

Mauricio told us on Monday: “Paulo played from the start of the competition against Watford at Milton Keynes, then against West Ham at the London Stadium and then against Arsenal at the Emirates. I think it’s normal that he’s going to play tomorrow.”
