Kompany tells Pep Guardiola not to risk midfielder vs Liverpool

Vincent Kompany says he hopes Pep Guardiola errs on the side of caution when it comes to deciding whether or not to start Kevin De Bruyne against Liverpool.

The Manchester City midfielder returned to training on Wednesday, with Guardiola confirming that the Belgian was in contention to face the Reds in Thursday’s huge Premier League encounter.

“He trained today but tomorrow we need another check in the morning,” said Guardiola at his pre-Liverpool press conference on Wednesday. “He’s much better.”

Jurgen Klopp was also complementary about De Bruyne on Wednesday, describing him as “”unbelievably influential, a world class player and he looks like a humble person. I expected that he would play.”

City go into the game seven points behind Liverpool in the title race, with a defeat extending that gap to 10.

But Kompany says he hopes Guardiola doesn’t take any risks with his Belgium teammate despite the importance of the game, citing that City still have key games ahead.

“We all know Kevin’s strengths and his ability to change a game,” the City club captain told Sky Sports.

“I really don’t know what physical state he is in.

“He seems to be alright but in a way I feel this season still has so much to offer. If I had to decide myself, what I would prefer is for Kevin to be fit for the rest of the season.

“Everybody is focused on Liverpool but there is much more we’ll need him for.”
