Referendum: Wetangula makes about turn, backs calls for constitutional amendment

FORD Kenya leader Moses Wetangula has declared support for surging calls to have a referendum stating that proposed changes will work for the good of all Kenyans.

However, it  is understood that Wengula had earlier critisised the idea of convening a plebiscite stating the move would only work towards accommodating people who lose in presidential elections.

The Bungoma Senator made his latest remarks on Monday, December 24, where he slammed leaders opposed to the referendum terming their ideologies as misplaced and misguided.

“Those people who are crying foul about having the office of a prime minister, or a deputy prime minister are people who are just whistling in the dark. This is inevitable… it is coming… and it will happen,” stated Wetangula.

In his argument, he poked holes in the current presidential system stating it encouraged acrimonious fallout immediately after elections. Expanding the executive, he said, would encourage inclusiveness and thus end political and ethnic animosity that have in the past threatened to tear apart the country.

“This country must go back to a parliamentary system or a mixed system where we do not have this winner takes it all restrictive structure that has nearly torn our country apart,” he added. However, Deputy President William Ruto and some leaders allied to him have strongly opposed the proposed review.

According to them, the changes envision introducing a skewed provision where political bigwigs are rewarded with plum jobs even after they lost in elections.
