Celtic should not break the bank in pursuit of Bournemouth’s Jermain Defoe

The absence of Leigh Griffiths has left Brendan Rodgers with a spot to fill in his squad as he looks to add another striker to the ranks with Celtic looking for a third consecutive treble, and Jermain Defoe may be the man to take it.

The Sunday Post say that he is a leading candidate under consideration from the Scottish club, though it would not be a cheap deal for Rodgers to do, which may force the club to reconsider.

The report claims that Defoe is paid a weekly six figure sum on the south coast, despite playing only 21 minutes of Premier League action this season and not having scored since an injury time equaliser against Watford in March.

In order to make any loan deal possible, Celtic may be forced to offer to pay a substantial amount of his wages, particularly with Sheffield United also believed to be interested.

However, Celtic cannot afford to get embroiled in a bidding war for the 36-year-old, who would be a gamble given his lack of recent game time and, in any case, would only be a short term fix.

Celtic need a striker, that much is clear, but it is not worth taking significant financial gambles in order to bring in a player who may not provide the solution the club need.
