Back to the streets!Nurses Union issues strike notice

Striking Nation! Days after the Kenya National Union of Teachers announced countrywide strike, the  Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) has issued a six-week strike notice over an unmet Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) entered with the government on November 2, 2017.

In a press address on Friday at the union headquarters in Uchumi house, Nairobi, KNUN Secretary General Seth Panyako said the strike would begin on February 4, 2019, if the deal is not fully implemented.

The nurses had on November 16 issued a 21 day strike notice over failure by the two levels of government to implement their return-to-work formula.

The union further pointed an accusing finger to various county governments for allegedly colluding with a former chairperson to defraud the union using various fraudulent accounts introduced in the IFMIS hence crippling the union financially.

They, however, later postponed the strike that was to begin on December 10 to give the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) more time to implement the CBA.

They are demanding an annual increase of Ksh.5,000 on uniform allowance and Ksh.3,000 increase on nursing allowance in the first year and Ksh.3,500 in the two subsequent years as per the CBA agreed.

Recently,Knun issued a 21-day strike notice starting November 19 but they however suspended following talks with the government.

According to the council, the decision was reached after the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) cancelled a meeting with the union to discuss the way forward for the implementation of November 2, 2017 return to work formula signed between the national, county governments and Knun.

The union General Secretary Seth Panyako who read a statement on behalf of the council said the agreement had factored in service allowance for nurses, which is yet to be implemented.
